As a senior dentist involved in pre-general anaesthetic assessment of children requiring extraction of primary teeth under general anaesthetic at Raigmore hospital, I was aware of observations of clinicians working on these lists, that BSc students assigned to these lists were requiring instruction in instrument handling rather than just support and experience as intended. Timing of lists in relation to instruction delivered in a simulation environment seemed to have led to skill-fade. Students also expressed a lack of confidence in questionnaires delivered to evaluate teaching and supported the view that video resources would help to maintain skills and knowledge. The involvement of videographers from the educational development unit at UHI developed my understanding of how to produce effective video resources from conceptual beginnings, learning objectives storyboarding and execution. Video resources were produced under my guidance by 2 cohorts of DF2 trainees for the BSc in Oral health Sciences. The first video resource relates to extraction of primary teeth. the second resource was produced the following year to support students with another complex clinical skill: the placement of preformed metal crowns on primary teeth.  The video resources have proven useful to students based on feedback and the use of peer observation using the EPA model is something I would like to implement to encourage students to gain insight into their evolving competence and to develop critical reflection.
