Leading Student-Centred Curriculum Co-Creation Through Design Thinking
This digital artefact is a structured workshop resource designed to support staff in co-creating curriculum using design-thinking approaches. It provides a step-by-step facilitation guide, including planning materials, activity prompts, and practical tools such as learner persona development, Think–Feel–Do–Need mapping, and collaborative problem-definition exercises.
The resource is informed by the development of the Events and Enterprise in Education module within Initial Teacher Education and demonstrates how student voice can be meaningfully embedded within curriculum design. It supports staff in identifying learner needs, skills gaps, and professional aspirations, and translating these insights into authentic, student-centred learning experiences.
Designed for adaptability, the workshop can be used across disciplines and educational contexts to support curriculum development, module review, or programme enhancement activity. It is particularly relevant for educators seeking to embed co-creation, experiential learning, and professional relevance within their teaching.
The artefact also supports staff development by modelling inclusive, collaborative approaches to curriculum design and providing a practical framework that can be repurposed for team-based enhancement activities, staff development sessions, or institutional initiatives focused on learning and teaching enhancement.
Advice for reuse
This resource can be reused by adapting the workshop structure to support curriculum design or review within different subject areas or programme contexts. Colleagues can use the design-thinking activities to gather student input on learning needs, skills development, and assessment approaches, enabling more student-centred and relevant module design. It can also be used as a staff development tool to introduce co-creation and experiential learning approaches within teaching teams. Additionally, the framework can support programme-level enhancement activities, including module revalidation, curriculum mapping, or improving student engagement and belonging.
